Mortágua

History states that Mortágua must have been conquered from the Moors by Fernando Magno but probably this area must have been occupied thousands of years before.  Some traces of an old pre-roman camp, situated near the Sanctuary of Senhor do Mundo, seem to prove this. The Arabs have left some sounds in the local names: Alcordal, Almaça and Almacinha... D. Duarte donated these lands to the descendants of  D. Sancho de Noronha. Subsequently, King Afonso V, King D. Manuel I and King D. João III confirmed this. There are reports dating back to the times of the Monarchy.  King D. Pedro II and his court passed through and stayed here, awakening the curiosity of the neighbours and the care of the nobles, officials and naturally of the church. The Parish Church of Mortágua was edified in the 16th century but the devotion to Nossa Senhora da Assumpção, to whom the church is devoted, dates further back.

From the Sanctuary of  Senhor do Mundo,  Moinhos de Sula,   Moura in the Buçaco Mountains or from the  Caramulo Mountain, the blue of the sky seems to be endless. The blue waters of the  Aguieira Dam enhances  the scenery in Mortágua.

By boat, one can discover beautiful spots.  Some places only the fishermen know. Some just go to the dam for a good sunbath.  Others will use a canoe to find all the beautiful spots. Be seduced by this immense blue lake.

In what concerns gastronomy there are wonderful surprises waiting for you: besides the “chanfana” there is a delicious rice pudding and an unexpected “Bolo de Cornos”. And there is the wine, the excellent Dão wine.
